As a parent I can only imagine the mixed emotions you must feel when one of your children enlists in the military. The extreme mix of pride, fear, and worry must be overwhelming at times, but for many families, pride wins out overall, as it should.

This week's Hometown Hero, Wyatt Siegner of Shannon, Illinois, was nominated by his Mom Tracy for excelling as a Marine despite everything he has missed out on due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This hometown hero is my son. He left last year on September 21st to join the Marine Corps, he spent 16 weeks at boot camp and went straight to infantry training. Our family (myself and his younger brother and sister) did not get to attend his graduation from either due to COVID. My son is currently at his permanent duty station in California preparing to deploy, all in his first year as a Marine. He has received a meritorious promotion in boot camp and performs as a team lead in his platoon. My son has never complained that he didn’t get to experience anything because of COVID. He serves proudly as a 3rd generation Marine and exemplifies honor and duty. He truly has always been and is my hero. He would lay down his life for his family and his country.

Way to go, Wyatt! You're doing a great job of making your family, your community, and your entire nation proud. As a thank you for your service and dedication, we would like to give you a $100 Amazon gift card thanks to our friends at Gustafson's Furniture & Mattress in Rockford. Maybe you can use it to buy something nice to surprise your Mom who misses you tremendously and of course get something nice for yourself too?
