As temperatures drop in northern Illinois, police are reminding parents that children wearing winter coats in car seats are at risk for injury. This is why police are reminding parents (and anyone transporting small children) to take one extra measure before getting behind the wheel.

Many parents may not even realize how dangerous a winter coat can be for a child strapped into a car seat but it's true. The reason is simple, the padding in the coat does not allow car seat straps to fully secure the child into the seat. A winter coat on a child in a car seat does not increase the chance of injury but it does impede the straps job of keeping him or her tightly secured.
