According to WTVO/WQRF, "Chet Epperson has accepted a position as a federal overseer for the New Orleans Police Department. The department has been under federal oversight since 2012 after allegations of rampant corruption".

During the press conference, Epperson recapped his 30 plus year career in the Rockford Police Department, beginning at the age of 18. He also noted his 9 1/2 year run as Chief was the pinnacle of his career serving the citizens of Rockford.

In addition to the news of his resignation, Epperson took the time to thank many for their support, including Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey.

The search for a new Rockford Police Chief has already begun. Internal and external candidates will all be considered by the Fire and Police Commission.
