Rockford Community Reacts to Deadly Shooting on Governor’s Drive
Early on Sunday, August 18, 2024, the Rockford Police Department responded to reports of gunfire on the 4500 block of Governor’s Drive.
A Quiet Sunday Morning Shattered by Gunfire
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 26-year-old Martayvious Evans suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Evans was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Two additional victims sought medical attention that morning. A 28-year-old male with gunshot wounds to his arm and hand, and a 35-year-old female with a gunshot wound to her lower leg, were treated at local hospitals and released.
Investigation Leads to Charges
Following an extensive investigation, the Rockford Police Department’s Violent Crime Unit identified 26-year-old Julian Patten as the primary suspect.
This week, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized a charge of first-degree murder against Patten, who has been held in the Winnebago County Jail on unrelated charges.
Authorities noted that the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be filed. Patten, like all accused individuals, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
