Rockford already has a few murals in downtown but that number will double in the near future. Many major cities have had murals on buildings for decades, and the forest city is finally getting on board. WTVO reports seven new murals are coming.

A bare building wall may soon be one of several to see some color. On Monday, Rockford City Council approved seven permits to allow murals to be painted throughout downtown.

Downtown restaurant owner Paul Sletton commented on the free advertising the city will get. An example is the hundreds of photos taken at Enlighten Experience, a pop-up museum in downtown, shared on Facebook and Instagram.

It's free advertisement really, especially with the culture that we're in, everything is an Instagram or Facebook post.

City of Rockford officials did mention there will be one artist per mural. There isn't a definitive answer as to what the murals will be, at least it hasn't become public. Hopefully, the murals will represent Rockford and its diversity. Regardless, it will bring more appeal and attraction to the downtown area.
