I gotta talk about this because I don't think anybody has ever confirmed or denied if this is legal to do in Illinois.

Remember back when you were really young.  Think of the first time you ever sat front passenger in your parents' car.  You're playing with all the buttons and so excited you are finally, legally allowed to sit in the front with dad.

You look up and see two lights right above the center console.  What do you instantly think when you see those lights?  You want to turn them on, yes!

But, what always happened when you turned on those lights at night time?

Your dad always said you can't have those lights on when you're driving because it's illegal.  With no explanation after!!!

Growing up, I was ALWAYS told that by my dad.  I always just believed it was true that you could get a ticket for driving with your interior lights (dome lights) on.

Now, I'm 25 and asking if that was actually true..  Has anybody figured it out?

I did.  The answer?

NO, IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO DRIVE WITH YOUR DOME LIGHTS ON.

It's actually legal in majority of the states - including Illinois, but it's just really unsafe.

Think about it... your light is on for a reason.  You're more tempted to search for something because you can see better.  Even if it's just reaching in the backseat, you're still somewhat distracted.

Or, if your interior light is on and it's pitch black on the road.  Your light would probably reflect off the windshield making it more difficult for you to see the road.  This could 100% obstruct your view of outside causing an accident!

I hope this helped.  I've been curious about this and a few of my friends, too.  The more you know! Stay safe on the roads and pay attention!
