Learn more about Illinois bicycle laws and safety.

I was visiting my mother a couple of weeks ago and she had an "Illinois Rules of the Road" book that she picked up at her local DMV. I asked her what it is for and she needed it to study. I guess she has to take a "behind the wheel" test to renew her driver's license later this year. Of course, it has been many years since she needed one, so she thought looking over the handbook would be a good idea. I definitely agree with that.

Many of the laws are tricky. Especially, when it comes to bicycles. Here is the perfect example. It was posted on the Illinois State Police Facebook page.

"Please leave at least 3 feet when passing a cyclist."

To be honest, I had no idea. I would have never guessed that close. We have to socially distance farther than that.

Do not worry, there is help. Ride Illinois has released its guide for 2021. You can check it out now, HERE. I think it is important for drivers and bicyclists to both know the laws. They have created a special Bike Safety Quiz to help you learn, HERE.

According to rideillinois.org,

"BikeSafetyQuiz.com is a first-of-its-kind resource developed by Ride Illinois that teaches adults, children, motorists, and truck drivers how to share the road safely. The interactive quizzes cover safety techniques and relevant state laws using images and short explanations for each answer."

Good luck and happy learning.
