There's something brand new at Rockford's Discovery Center, and it might be one of the most beautiful things you'll see all week.

It's called the 'Musical Bench'.  It's now part of the Melody in Motion exhibit gallery on the second floor.  But this isn't just a bench you sit on while your kids are running around!  This one only works when two people connect.

Rockford’s Discovery Center's Musical Bench Honoring Jalyah Thompson

Here's how it works: two people sit down and place their hands on the gold metal sensors built into the armrests.  Nothing happens at first, but when you reach over and touch the other person's hand?  That's when the magic happens.

Your bodies act as a circuit, and music begins to play.

It literally turns human connection into sound!  How cool is that?!

The bench was revealed in honor of Jalyah Noel Trevino Thompson, and it serves as a reminder to be kind and stay in tune with each other.  And honestly, that message hits even harder when you realize music only happens when we physically connect.

It's simple.  It's interactive.  It sends a powerful message.

The Discovery Center Museum does an incredible job creating experiences that are hands-on and meaningful, but this one feels extra special.  It's not just something fun for kids, it's something that makes you pause for a second.

In a world where we're constantly on our phones, constantly distracted, here's a bench that says, "Hey, hold someone's hand."  And then it rewards you with music.

Jalyah's bench is located at Rockford's Discovery Center on the second floor near the Melody in Motion area if you'd love to check it out!
