For more than two decades, “Paulyground” at Alpine Park has been a go-to destination for Rockford families. As the city’s first inclusive playground, it was built so children of all abilities could play together, side-by-side. Now, after 22 years of climbing, swinging, and sliding, this beloved play space is getting a fresh start.

Honoring a Legacy of Inclusive Play

Named in memory of Mike Pauly, a Rockford Park District landscape architect who championed accessibility, Paulyground was ahead of its time when it opened in 2003. The new design keeps that spirit alive while upgrading safety, accessibility, and fun. Thanks to community input and guidance from parents, therapists, and disability advocates, the reimagined Paulyground will feature equipment found nowhere else in the District.

Families can look forward to features like the We-Go-Swing®, a no-transfer swing that welcomes kids of all abilities, the 360 Loop for independent mobility adventures, and a Serenity Spot for children who need a calming play space.

The playground will also include wheelchair-accessible equipment, sensory-friendly features, a communication board for non-verbal players, and smooth, unitary surfacing for easier movement.
