Update: Walmart To Close 4 More Illinois Stores By This Weekend

If this is starting to feel like something out of the movie Groundhog Day, it's perfectly understandable. You probably remember that earlier in the week I told you about Walmart's plans to close 15 stores across the country this month, including 3 in Illinois and 1 in Wisconsin.

You and I both probably thought that Walmart would then move on to other things, but it appears as though we were premature in thinking that, because they're most certainly not done closing stores here in Illinois.

Walmart made that perfectly clear with their latest announcement this week that they're shutting down operations at 4 additional Illinois Walmart locations.

Walmart Says That They're Permanently Closing 4 Of Their 8 Chicago Stores, And They Want To Get It Done As Early As The End Of This Weekend (April 16th)

As Walmart has said before, they have a history of closing a few of their underperforming stores every year. They shuttered a "handful of stores" in 2019 and 2020, but they closed nearly 150 Walmart stores back in 2016.

Before we get to the newest closings, in case you missed it, Walmart's closing announcement last week covered these Illinois and Wisconsin locations:

• 17550 South Halsted St., Homewood
• 12690 S. Route 59, Plainfield
• 840 N. McCormick Blvd, Lincolnwood

And in Wisconsin:

10330 W. Silver Spring Dr., Milwaukee

Walmart Says That The 4 Additional Illinois Locations Marked For Closure Haven't Been Profitable In Nearly 17 Years

Here's the wording from the Walmart announcement:

...these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years. The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community.

We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the city, including $70 million in the last couple years to upgrade our stores and build two new Walmart Health facilities and a Walmart Academy training center. Unfortunately, these efforts have not materially improved the fundamental business challenges our stores are facing.

Here are the latest additions.The following stores will close to the public by Sunday, April 16th:

• #5781 Chatham Supercenter, the Walmart Health center, and the Walmart Academy, 8431 S. Stewart Ave.
• #3166 Kenwood Neighborhood Market, 4720 S. Cottage Grove Ave.
• #5645 Lakeview Neighborhood Market, 2844 N. Broadway St.
• #5646 Little Village Neighborhood Market, 2551 W. Cermak Road

The pharmacies at these locations will remain open to serve patients for up to 30 days.
