When you look back on the last five food-related product recalls that affected the state of Illinois, you'll see that three of those five recalls were due to the possible presence of either salmonella or listeria. Other recalls over the last year have also been issued due to a possible contamination of E. Coli, which is something else everyone should do their best to avoid.

The current recall on ground beef that affects Illinois and 4 other states has nothing to do with salmonella, E. Coli, or listeria--but it is due to a possible contamination, and like the other recalls, it's something that you will want to avoid eating:

A Michigan-Based Meat Company Is Recalling 1,065 Pounds Of Product Due To Potential Contamination Of Metal Fragments

That company, Ada Valley Meat Company, initiated the recall late last week for over a thousand pounds of fully cooked frozen ground beef that may be contaminated with metal, according to the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

According to FSIS, the frozen ready-to-eat meat was packed into 20-pound cardboard box cases and shipped to establishments and distributors in California, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

The labels of the recalled items will include the following:

  • Pack date May 28, 2025, with lot code 35156
  • Pack date May 30, 2025, with lot code 35157

FSIS.USDA.gov:

The problem was discovered after the firm notified FSIS that it received a consumer complaint reporting that pieces of metal were found in the product. There have been no confirmed reports of injury due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some products may be in institutional freezers. Institutions who have purchased these products are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS wants to make sure consumers are aware that some of the recalled products could bear a different establishment number on the label due to further distribution and processing by other establishments.
