The Cubs Are Debuting A Rom-Com “9 Innings To Love” This Week
This was never on my bingo card, but it looks like the Chicago Cubs are getting into the rom-com business.
By now, most people know the Chicago Bears are getting the full Hallmark treatment this fall with Holiday Touchdown: A Bears Love Story, premiering on Saturday, October 17th.
Well, apparently the Chicago Cubs looked at that and decided: “Hey, we want some romantic attention, too.”
And they're not waiting until Christmas.
Who Wouldn't Love A 17-Part Rom-Com Series With A Cubs Theme?
The Cubs are getting into the rom-com business with Nine Innings to Love, a 17-part romantic comedy series that will debut exclusively on TikTok this Friday, September 4th. Yes, you read that correctly. The Chicago Cubs are making a romantic comedy.
And honestly, I kind of love this.
According to an online synopsis, the story follows Ava, an aspiring romance writer who's in a bit of a creative slump, and David, a sweet but decidedly romance-skeptical guy who happens to be sitting next to her in the Wrigley Field bleachers. After their accidental “meet-cute,” Ava decides she's going to become David's love coach and help him find a summer fling before the Cubs game is over.
Naturally, things don't go exactly according to plan.
17 Episodes, 1 Game
The entire story unfolds over the course of one Cubs game, with the 17 short episodes spread across nine innings. We're promised all the necessary ingredients for a proper rom-com, like swings and misses, a makeover, a returning ex and even a ninth-inning chase.
So basically, When Harry Met Sally, except instead of New York City, we've got Wrigley Field, and instead of arguing about relationships over lunch, these people presumably have to contend with somebody yelling “Green Bay Sucks!” every 14 seconds.
The Cubs say the series was inspired by the very real phenomenon of fans meeting and making romantic connections at Wrigley Field (like the team's owner and his wife). And if you've ever spent an afternoon in the Budweiser Bleachers, you know that pretty much anything can happen out there.
So, Bears fans get a Hallmark movie.
Cubs fans get 17 episodes of TikTok romance.
Somebody better keep an eye on the White Sox. They’re going to have to scramble to come up with their own romantic comedy before the Bulls or Blackhawks jump in.
