Another Day, Another Bizarre Missouri Quake – This One Was Bigger

I don't know if you've noticed, but 2024 has started off strange. Winter in Missouri has been weird with way above normal temperatures and very little snow. Oh, and now on consecutive days, there have been bizarre Missouri quakes and this latest one was bigger, too.

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but there was an earthquake south of St. Louis near Farmington, Missouri at 10:48pm Sunday night. It was a mild 1.9 that no one felt. Now, less than 24 hours later, I see the USGS has confirmed that another quake in a weird Missouri location. This one happened just to the east of Grandin, Missouri. This wasn't a major quake either, but it was bigger as the USGS has confirmed it was a 2.7 magnitude quake (also felt by no one).

This one was at least closer to the New Madrid Fault where quakes in the Bootheel are commonplace. You just don't normally see earthquakes in this part of Missouri although this is closer to the norm.

Combine this newest quake with the one Sunday night and the mini-swarm of 8 last week and it makes me wonder if something bigger isn't brewing. Keep in mind that I am no USGS geologist, but I have interviewed many of them and have learned a thing or two about quakes. These small ones are nothing to be alarmed about, but it's another reminder that we've been warned for years that a major New Madrid quake could happen. This makes me wonder if it will be sooner rather than later. For all of our sakes, let's hope not.
