As we've shared previously, there are some area codes that can be problematic when it comes to incoming scam phone calls. But, Aura made a great find when they learned of 12 specific phone numbers that they say are commonly used by scammers to victimize Illinoisans.

The report they shared says that as recent as a year or two ago, a vast majority of scam attempts in Illinois came from these specific phone numbers:

  • (865) 630-4266 - Aura said that this was the number used to try and mislead those with Wells Fargo accounts.
  • (469) 709-7630 - This number is used for a message about a package awaiting delivery to you. Don't fall for it. It's a trap.
  • (805) 637-7243 - Ever have a phone call claiming you're a Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes winner? It likely came from this number.
  • (858) 605-9622 - Bank or credit card hacked? It wasn't, but that's what the caller from this number wants you to believe.
  • (863) 532-7969 - The losers from this number may claim that your bank card has been frozen and they want to "help". What they really want is to steal your bank account info.
  • (904) 495-2559 - What's worst than getting someone's hopes up thinking they've won a sweepstakes? To drain their bank account trying to "transfer the winnings" to it.
  • (312) 339-1227 - Weight loss supplements? No, the only thing that will be subtracted is your bank balance if you play along.
  • (917) 540-7996 - Reportedly robot-marketing calls come from this one. Answer and you're automatically added to scammer lists.
  • (347) 437-1689 - A bad phone number to get around tax refund time. It is also sometimes used to tell you that you have won a free vacuum.
  • (301) 307-4601 - They'll say they're from the Postal Service. They're not and the "package" they have for you is a rip-off.
  • (878) 877-1402 - Another scammer who wants to "unfreeze" your debit card for you...directly into their bank account.
  • (202) 221-7923 - Aura says that scams involving alleged student loan forgiveness come from this number. Avoid at all costs - literally.

If you live in Illinois, it's wise to also avoid numbers you don't know even if it has 217, 224, 309, 312, 331, 618, 630, 708, 773, 779, 815, 847 or 872 area code. Scammers can now spoof local area codes from wherever they are to make it look like you're being contacted by a local person.
