A nationwide recall of cheese products happened last month, and now it's been found in even more products than originally thought. The listeria outbreak has sickened hundreds and may even go back a decade.

The Outbreak was first detected in 2014, yes nearly 10 years ago.

A listeria outbreak began in 2014, and now investigators have found evidence that has been linked to products made by Modesto, California-based Rizo-Lopez Foods.

According to CBS, the CDC investigated another outbreak in 2017 and 2021, but couldn't identify the source of a specific brand. Then in January of this year, Hawaiin officials found listeria in a sample of the Rizo Brothers Aged Cotija.

A recall was started then for the products, but Yahoo News! has reported that it has since expanded. Now it's affecting a major Wisconsin-based company.

Wisconsin-based Sargento Cheese is now linked to the recall.

Sargento Cheese is based out of Plymouth, Wisconsin.

It was found that Rizo-Lopez supplied some of the products to Sargento. Sargento then started their recall and terminated their contract with the California company.

Which products are affected?

Fortunately, the Sargento recall only applies to a limited amount of their foods ervice and ingredient products that were sold to businesses. They weren't sold to customers. Sargento says their Sargento Brand cheese wasn't affected.

Specific expanded recall products linked to Sargento:

2,008 cases of Cojita cheese, 1,791 cases of Parmesan Cheese, 1,143 cases of Swiss Cheese, 264 cases of Asiago Cheese, 1,104 cases of Monterey Jack Cheese, 2,633 cases of White Cheddar Cheese, 349 cases of Cheddar Cheese, 93 cases of shredded taco cheese, 97 cases of Italian Cheese, 956 cases of Deep V Shredded Taco Cheese blend, and 30 cases of Bevel Shredded Queso Cheese.

Once again, these were sold to businesses, not individually sold in-store directly to consumers.

What are the symptoms of Listeria?

The CDC says to be aware of the symptoms of Listeria, which can be even more serious to pregnant women.

  • Fever
  • Flu-like symptoms including muscle aches and fatigue
  • headache
  • stiff neck
  • confusion
  • loss of balance
  • seizures
