Rockford’s Snow Sculpting Competition Postponed, But Not Due to Weather
The 40th Annual Snow Sculpting Competition scheduled to take place at Sinnissippi Park in Rockford January 28-31, 2026 has been postponed, but this time it's not Mother Nature's fault.
Rockford's Snow Sculpting Competition
Every winter for the last 40 years, Rockford has had the honor of hosting the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition where teams from all over the region carve large masterpieces from blocks of snow.
The competition features two divisions, State and High School, and for 4 days teams work day and night creating huge sculptures that the public can vote on and view for free.
Each year the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition is scheduled to take place in late-January, but in past Mother Nature has done a good job of messing up those plans...but not this year.
2026 Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition Postponed
The start of 2026 has been pretty mild weather wise, so I'm sure many Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition enthusiasts were preparing themselves for an announcement like this from the Rockford Park District:
The 40th Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition, scheduled for January 28-31, 2026, at Sinnissippi Park, 1401 N. Second Street, Rockford, has been postponed to February 11-14, 2026.
However, few expected this to be the reason why the competition was postponed:
During a routine test of the snowmaking equipment, a mechanical issue occurred, and the Rockford Park District is now waiting for a part needed to repair the specialized equipment.
So, Mother Nature isn't to blame for the competition being postponed...At least not yet.
Let's all keep our fingers crossed that the part arrives quickly and that the weather cooperates so the show can go on in February!
