How A New Scam Is Making Its Way Into Rockford Mailboxes
Always be aware of new scams happening around your area. If you think something is too good to be true, trust your gut!
I used to work as a front desk rep at a police department and the amount of scams that came through every day was mind blowing. Look, it'll happen eventually to everybody at some point in life. That's when we say, "that'll never happen to me." Oh sure, think that all you want!
Well, a new scam made its way to Rockford and targeted me this week, so I'm getting you ahead of the game before you fall victim!
I got a call from my parents saying a package "I ordered" had arrived to THEIR house. That's odd because I never get anything shipped there. I also didn't order anything recently, so maybe it was delivered to the wrong person?
After Facetiming my Mom, I noticed the address was from Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia and the package had gone through Customs... weird.
The package also said I ordered stud earrings and had these inside, but I don't have any piercings anywhere on my body. Hmmm...
After calling my sisters to see if they ordered anything, they said nope. So I Googled the phone number at the bottom of the package and INSTANTLY it pulls up this:
I KNEW IT. It's a scam!
A bunch of other people also asked Google why random Amazon packages were getting delivered to them even though they never ordered anything. The answer?
IT'S CALLING BRUSHING.
Basically, a random Amazon seller will find your information and send you a product of theirs in HOPES that you'll leave a review on their page under YOUR Amazon account. They want others to believe they are selling HOT items so other sellers won't get as much business.
After you leave a review (PLEASE DON'T!), the seller will make a FAKE PROFILE with your name and post FAKE positive reviews of other products they sell. Genius, right?
Honestly, this isn't one of the WORST scams to happen to you, in my opinion. The best part of it is you get a FREE product for doing absolutely nothing! Sadly, I didn't get anything useful lol.
Well, make sure if you receive a package like I did, you check your Amazon reviews to see if any unauthorized ones have been added to your account. Contact Amazon right away if there's any suspicious activity. If there's nothing, you're probably good to go!
