When you hear the term "Hometown Hero" our minds usually focus on a military member or first responder, and that is absolutely true, but if the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is that heroes can be found throughout a community and from all walks of life.

This week's Hometown Hero, Andrew Walters of Byron, is not only a Marine who served in Afghanistan but also a man who continues to fight for all of us in the war against COVID-19. To truly understand what a remarkable person Andrew Walter is, all you need to do is read the letter sent to us by Andrew's fiancee, Catherine...

I’m nominating my fiancé Andrew Walters. Not only did Andrew serve our country and in the war in Afghanistan in the Marine Corps, but came home and still wanted to help people. He received his bachelors in nursing at ISU and currently works a job he loves as an Intensive Care Registered Nurse. He was on the front lines when COVID hit hard and went to work sometimes 6, even 7 days a week and never once complained. He genuinely cares about what he does and you can see it in his work. I’m sure all his coworkers, family & friends would agree when I say Andrew is very deserving of the hometown hero title❤️

Catherine, we couldn't agree more. To thank Andrew for his continued service to our community, we would like to give him a $100 Amazon gift card thanks to our friends at Gustafson's Furniture & Mattress, along with our heartfelt appreciation and respect. You caught yourself a good one there, Catherine.
