Parents and students of Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Homewood, Illinois are very upset about a last-minute change that has forced some teens to be turned away from prom.

Prom Planning

It's been a LONG time since I went to my senior prom, but I was on the prom committee and it took several years of planning to pull it off. We had to book a venue WAY in advance, find a photographer, choose, buy, and make decorations, sell tickets, you get the point. A lot of prom planning happens in advance, so how in the world could this Illinois high school find themselves in a spot where they have to turn students away from attending?!?

Illinois High School Turns Students Away From Prom

Students at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Homewood, Illinois have been busy making prom plans for months.

The dresses have been bought, the tuxes have been rented, the dinner reservations have been made, and the flowers have been ordered. Students were excited to get all dolled up and celebrate this major high school milestone, but for some, the prom entrance just got slammed in their faces.

WHAT?!? WHY?!?

According to ABC 7 Chicago;

The school said it had to limit the number of attendees due to a last-minute venue switch.

Excuse me, what? How can they tell some students, "We're just kidding, you can't really attend prom after all"?

It's maddening to me, and I don't even live in that community.

Turns out, it's not really the school's fault. The new owners of the original venue are to blame.

A Disappointing Venue Change

ABC 7 Chicago reports;

The school had hoped to host this year's prom at the venue they'd planned on using in 2020, which was canceled due to COVID, but since then the management company sold the larger venue and could only provide its smaller space.

Not. Cool.

I'm assuming the school doesn't have enough time to find a bigger venue space, so they made the decision to allow seniors to attend prom while pushing some juniors to a waitlist.

I understand stand that desperate times call for desperate measures, but can you blame parents for being upset that students weren't informed of the change until the last minute?

Homewood-Flossmoor High School, you better make dang sure this doesn't happen again in 2024.
