How Fishing Licenses Benefit Illinois Waters
Revenue from fishing licenses is used to support critical programs with the IDNR's fisheries division, which helps fund fishery management, hatchery operations, and habitat restoration.
Unlike other programs in Illinois that are funded by the state, fisheries management relies entirely on fishing licenses rather than general tax revenue, according to the press release.
The successful management of quality fishing opportunities relies on the commitment and support of anglers, and that starts with buying a fishing license. By purchasing a fishing license, anglers are ensuring sport fishing, hatchery production, and habitat enhancements are here for current and future generations to enjoy in communities throughout Illinois. -IDNR chief of fisheries Mike McClelland
Federal Support Enhances Local Efforts
Federal funding from the Sport Fish Restoration Program helped benefit Illinois, and since it was established in 1950 has been funded by an excise tax on fishing equipment, motorboat fuel, and other accessories.
