Seasonal fishing instructors are being hired by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to teach free clinics across the state this summer.

Teaching Fishing and Conservation Across Illinois

The IDNR is recruiting instructors for its 2026 summer fishing clinics as part of the state's long-running Illinois Urban Fishing Program. Officials say the temporary positions offer a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to teach fishing skills while promoting conservation across Illinois communities.

Fishing instructors serve as the department's "boots on the ground" at free fishing clinics held in neighborhoods throughout the state. The seasonal roles last up to six months and are designed for individuals who enjoy working with people and spending time outdoors.

Seasonal Opportunities in Multiple Illinois Counties

Available instructor positions are based in several counties across Illinois, including Boone, Cook, McHenry, Rock Island, Sangamon, and St. Clair.

Officials say the positions may appeal to teachers, retirees, college students, and others interested in environmental education or community outreach during the summer months.

The instructors help lead hands-on fishing demonstrations, teach basic techniques, and explain the role healthy ecosystems play in maintaining strong fish populations.

A Program With Decades of Impact

The Illinois Urban Fishing Program was established in 1985 to expand fishing opportunities in urban areas and introduce new generations to outdoor recreation.
