Illinois Officials Urge Vigilance as Pool Drownings Rise Nationwide
With the popularity of home pools growing across Illinois and the U.S., there have been some concerns over child safety.

Health officials warn that more backyard pools have led to an increase in accidental drownings, with many involving children under the age of five.

According to the press release, 81 percent of fatal drownings among children occur in a residential setting, often when supervision lapses for only moments.

Safety Measures Can Drastically Reduce Risk
Having a four-sided isolation fence with a self-latching gate around your pool can reduce a child's risk of drowning by 83 percent, according to the American Red Cross.
Just taking simple precautions like removing toys from the pool deck, securing ladders on above-ground pools, and teaching children to swim can be lifesaving.
Parents and pool owners are also urged to learn CPR, install door alarms, and use drain covers that meet federal standards to prevent suction entrapment injuries. There are nearly 6,700 nonfatal pool injuries reported every year among children, according to the press release.
Chemical Safety and Emergency Preparedness Also Key
Another hazard around residential pools is the chemicals, such as chlorine, which result in approximately 4,500 emergency room visits each year, with many involving kids.
Pool owners are advised to store chemicals securely and follow instructions carefully.
