HBO Documentary Sheds New Light On Illinois State Park Murders
This new HBO documentary looks like it could be some fresh catnip for those that devour true crime documentaries.
The true crime documentary genre has absolutely exploded over the last decade. I feel like it really took off with the Serial podcast. The 2014 podcast that took a new look at a recent murder was one of the first "true crime" investigations that truly went viral. You couldn't go anywhere without someone asking you about it.
Saturday Night Live even did a funny bit about it.
Shortly after that, HBO released The Jinx, a great documentary about the Robert Durst murders that (spoiler alert) ends with Durst admitting his guilt while forgetting he had a microphone on during a bathroom break.
It's amazing.
These new looks at past crimes all have one thing in common, questioning the validity of the initial judgment and that seems to be at the crux of this new HBO documentary about a series of murders at Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle County, Illinois 60 years ago.
I personally did not know about the Starved Rock murders but this documentary looks incredible.
It centers around a man that went to prison for the murders of three women at Starved Rock in the 60s and the young lawyer that fought to put him away. The lawyer's son wants to set the record straight because it seems to be that he thinks his dad was over zealous in building a case against him and might have over looked some facts.
HBO has been killing the documentary game lately and this looks like it could be another big hit not just here in Illinois but nationally as well.
The documentary premieres on HBO and HBOMax on December 14th, just in time for the holidays.
