Got A Few Pennies? Here’s The Cheapest Place To Buy A Home In Illinois
Would you like to buy a home but are unsure if you have the cash to make that purchase?
Homeownership is one of the biggest parts of living the American dream.
Get the home, get a white picket fence and two and a half kids, and boom, you're living the life we all hope for.
However, realizing those dreams is tough if you don't make enough cash to pull it off.

Then again, there is one place in Illinois where you could make that purchase, and Go Banking Rates ranked it as the cheapest place to buy a home in the entire state.
Using the Zillow Home Value Index, which measures the "typical home value in a given region," the story says homes here are less than $20,000.
That is not a typo. Yes, you can buy a home here for less than a used car.
Do you have any idea what city I'm talking about? Here's a hint: the total population is less than 1700.
I'm talking about Cairo. No, not the Cairo in Egypt, but the one in Southern Illinois, which locals pronounce as CARE-OH.
Only In Your State took a look at Cairo and said Exploring The Abandoned Town of Cairo, Illinois, Is the Closest Thing You'll Get To Time Travel.
If you think that sounds unflattering, you are not wrong. On the other hand, Rooted Wanderings calls Cairo a "hidden gem at the confluence of history and rivers."
I have never been to Cairo. Is it as bad as Only In Your State makes it sound, or should we be more positive, like the folks at Rooted Wanderings?
Either way, homes are absolute steals right now in Cairo. This might be just enough to cause a massive population spike.
