Someone fired several rounds of gunshots at a southeast Rockford home early on Wednesday morning (3/29) where a young girl was sleeping, striking her in the head.

Rockford Juvenile Shot While She Slept

According to a press release from the Rockford Police Department, officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim around 1:55 am on Wednesday in the 2300 block of Wisconsin Road.

Upon arrival, officers from the Rockford PD noticed that the home had been struck "numerous" times by bullets.

Inside the residence, officers then found a 12-year-old female in her bed that had sustained "a life-threatening gunshot wound to her head."

Girl survives shooting but is in critical condition

Rockford Police said the 12-year-old victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition but was in stable condition at the time of the press release.

No details about a suspect in the shooting were provided in the press release, but Rockford Police urge anyone with information about this incident to contact detectives by calling 815-966-2900, or to make an anonymous tip to Rockford Area Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
