My husband and I have visited Galena, Illinois more times than I can count, but we've only stayed at Chestnut Mountain Resort once, and it was during the summer!

Several years ago we stayed at Chestnut Mountain on the 4th of July when we went to Galena for their Independence Day festivities. While we did spend most of our time downtown enjoying Galena's parade, brewery, and fireworks, our stay at Chestnut Mountain revealed an unexpected surprise, the resort's Alpine Slide!

Our kids were too young to go on Chestnut Mountain's Alpine Slide when we stayed at the resort, but it has always been something we want to go back and check out.

Here's how the Alpine Slide experience is explained on Chestnut Mountain's website;

Cruise down 2,050 feet of tailored track on a sled to the banks of the Mississippi on the ride of your life. Our scenic lift returns you back to the top of the mountain where a gorgeous panoramic view of three states is unveiled. The view is just as much of an attraction as the downhill adrenaline rush itself.

Since I am not an adrenaline junkie, I was happy to learn that each Alpine Sled is equipped with a brake system that allows each rider to determine how fast they go...so the ride is suitable for all ages and adventure levels.
