For weeks we have been talking about trick-or-treating in 2020. Will it happen? Should it happen? Will you actually take your kids?

I don't know about you, but as a parent, I've had to crush my kids too many times this year. Too many things they were looking forward to have been cancelled in 2020, and I refuse to add 'no trick-or-treating' to the list of bad news I have to tell them. Yes, we are dealing with COVID-19 in my house, but we are officially out of quarantine by Halloween, so we WILL find a way to trick-or-treat  in the safest way possible this year.

That being said, many cities and towns in the Stateline area have established trick-or-treating hours for this Saturday, but now the City of Freeport is 'strongly discouraging' their residents from actually doing it.

The City of Freeport released a statement on Monday that said in part;

The City’s elected officials and Administration strongly discourage individuals and families from participating in traditional door-to-door Trick or Treating.

Freeport's official trick-or-treating hours are from 4:30 to 6 p.m. this Saturday, and since they know many families will still choose to go door-to-door this year, they have offered some suggestions on how to do it safely while COVID-19 cases are on the rise...

  1. Only go to houses that have their front porch light on.
  2. Face masks need to be worn by everyone participating; kids in costume, guardians and people handing out candy.
  3. Wear gloves.
  4. Follow social distancing guidelines and keep non-family groups to five or less.
  5. Families should stay together and groups should not intermingle.
  6. Avoid over-crowded areas.
  7. Wash and/or sanitize hands often.
  8. Sanitize all candy wrappers when you get home.

The Winnebago County Health Department has issued the same guidelines for trick-or-treaters to follow, but now I ask you this; with COVID on the rise in the Stateline, have you changed your mind about trick-or-treating this year?
