Abandoned buildings in Illinois are always disturbing to see, but an abandoned funeral home? That's on a whole other level of disturbing.

Fascination With Abandoned Buildings

Are you someone who loves all things creepy? Do you live for the jump scares and gore of haunted houses and scary movies? I am not one of those people.

In fact, I'm a huge wimp when it comes to scary stuff with one major exception: abandoned buildings.

I don't spend my free time walking through abandoned properties, but I do spend a decent chunk of it looking at photos and watching videos from inside abandoned buildings in Illinois and Wisconsin. Why? Because I am completely fascinated by the things people leave behind.

Houses full of old food and family photographs...Businesses with merchandise and valuable equipment still in it.  Aren't these things that people would want to take with them or sell?

I get that people die and life can change in an instant, but seeing abandoned properties still full of stuff leaves me with so many questions.

Creepy Abandoned Funeral Home Near Chicago

Whenever I'm in the mood for an abandoned property binge, Decayingmidwest is usually the first place I check out.

I don't know how they get access to the inside of so many buildings (or sometimes why they would want to) but the photos they capture are fascinating.

Today I spotted these pictures, and got completely weirded out:

Honestly, funeral homes in general give me the willies, but seeing one in that terrible state of decay is even worse. Why is a building like that still standing? It can't just be due to the cost of demolition?

After reading through the post comments, I quickly realized I wasn't the only one asking those questions. I also realized I wasn't prepared for the truth.

Here are a few of the comments that completely unnerved me:

they abandoned the building itself, there’s definitely underground tanks that still have bodily fluids in them.

I hate the secrecy ppl have the right to know about the sewers they live around and such.

So, is this abandoned funeral home still standing because the ground around it is contaminated with old bodily fluids? I think I may lose my lunch.
