As I've been working on fitness and body building for years, I've tried lots of different fitness apps. Back in the day, I even tracked these things with good old-fashion pen and paper.

I just got a chance to try the new Evolt 360 body composition machine and app at Anytime Fitness — and I have to say, this is a premier experience. You can track nutrition, workouts, macros and key fitness stats. Everything you need to know is right in one place, whether you're trying to get in shape or working toward a big goal.

Getting started was easy: I just talked with a manager at Anytime Fitness about adding it to my membership and had my first body composition scan. I downloaded the app, made my profile, stepped on the body comp machine barefoot and held onto the handles.

Soon, I had a printout that estimated how many calories I burn each day at rest, how my muscle mass is distributed throughout my body, my body fat percentage and water weight (which is important to know if you're dehydrated.) The muscle weight of different body parts (like right arm vs. left arm) can give you a clue if you are injured. Your water and mineral level which informs you if you are getting enough to eat and drink.

All that data was sent right to my app, and I'm scheduled to go back for another scan this month. Hopefully, I'll see some improvements in the key areas.

Now being that I am in "prep" mode for a bodybuilding show June 22, this is perfect for me because my body fat percentage and water weight is something I monitor closely. For people who are just starting out, this data can be a great motivator because (unlike just stepping on a scale) you can really see your progress month to month. If you've been working out for awhile, this can help you set your next goals and confirm good hydration.

A trainer also can use the data to put together a mock workout that would help address your weak spots and achieve your goals.
