If your house sounds anything like mine right now, you've probably heard the phrase, "Mom...I'm boooored," approximately 4,972 times already this summer.

My kids can go from swimming in the pool, playing Roblox, raiding the pantry, and watching a movie to claiming there's "nothing to do" in under 15 minutes. Frankly, I'm about to lose my mind.
At this point in summer break, I think every Northern Illinois parent is looking for fun day trips to take their kids on that aren't far from home and don't cost a ton of money. Thankfully, we have a long list of great options to choose from that are all located within two hours from the Rockford area.
Fun Family Attractions in Rockford
Rockford has plenty of great family attractions that many families forget about. Here are some that automatically come to mind:
- Discovery Center Museum
- Hurricane Harbor Rockford
- Burpee Museum of Natural History
- Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere
- Tilted 10
- Volcano Falls
- Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens
If your family has lived in the Rockford area for years, and has already visited those fantastic places multiple times, it might be time to shake things up a bit.

I started searching for fun places that are close enough to visit in a single day, but different enough that my kids forget they're "bored" for a few hours, and I found so many cool ideas!
The best part? None of these attractions require booking a hotel or draining your bank account for a day of fun. (Major mom win!)
Here are five places my kids chose as great day trip options for the remainder of summer break:
