5 of Illinois’ Scariest Haunted Houses Are Within Driving Distance of Rockford

Ready to get terrified? Here are five haunted houses you need to check out in Illinois this Halloween season.

Illinois Haunted Houses

I never thought I would become the kind of mom who spends her free time researching haunted houses.

And yet, here I am.

My daughter is almost 13, and for her birthday, she has decided she wants to do something she has NEVER done before: go to a haunted house with a few of her friends.

To be perfectly clear, haunted houses are NOT my thing.

I love Halloween for the cute spooky stuff. I love dressing up and handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, but I DO NOT like being chased through a dark building by somebody dressed as a chainsaw-wielding maniac.

Still, my daughter really wants to go, so Mama Bear is doing her homework so Papa Bear can take her to a haunted house for her birthday.

Scariest Haunted Houses in Illinois

During my search for the best haunted houses, I found a list that The Scare Factor recently put together of 10 must-see haunted attractions in Illinois for 2026.

My daughter would love to go to all ten on the list, but since we don't want to drive halfway across Illinois, I have narrowed the list down to the five that are closest to the Rockford area... and they all sound absolutely terrifying.

Obviously, we have to start with this one:

1. Twisted Crypt in Rockford

The Scare Factor describes Twisted Crypt as a different kind of haunted-house experience that focuses heavily on characters, storytelling and interaction. Other visitors agree too:

2. Realm of Terror Haunted House in Round Lake Beach

Distance from Rockford: About 59 miles

This attraction has been around for more than two decades and combines live actors, practical effects and detailed environments. The Scare Factor describes it as having a darker, old-school haunted-house feel mixed with modern production.

Realm of Terror also features a virtual waiting system, so you don't have to spend your entire evening waiting in line. You can check out the Monster Museum, play games, or enjoy food and cocktails on site while you wait.

3. 5 Points Haunted House – West Chicago

Distance from Rockford: About 61 miles

5 Points Haunted House is located in a 100-year-old barn and covers 15,000 square feet across two floors. The Scare Factor says its reviewers loved the way the actors use dialogue and distraction to keep guests guessing.

5 Points also has an escape room you can visit with a group... if you're brave enough to find the clues.

4. Basement of the Dead – Aurora

Distance from Rockford: About 67 miles

As if regular haunted houses weren't terrifying enough, Basement of the Dead takes the haunted experience underground.

Basement of the Dead actually includes two experiences: Basement of the Dead, which takes guests through an underground laboratory filled with creepy characters, creatures and special effects, and Shattered 3D which is a colorful and disorienting experience.

5. Massacre Haunted House – Montgomery

Distance from Rockford: About 74 miles

While searching for the scariest haunted houses in Illinois, Massacre Haunted House kept popping up in my search... and it looks terrifying.

Massacre Haunted House features dozens of rooms filled with special effects and live actors, and The Scare Factor describes it as one of the scariest haunts in the state.

I'm still trying to determine whether my daughter wants a genuinely terrifying experience or just wants to be able to tell her friends she survived one.

Either way, I hope my husband has fun with them, because I am officially too scared to go with.
