Has the flu invaded your home or you feel it coming on? My fiance and I both currently have some sort of yucky stuff happening to us, which got me thinking, how can I make this better for me?

I naturally Googled "how to make the flu go away." The first source that popped up was WedMD, I pretty reliable source for these things. With that being said, this isn't medical advice or what you should do if you have an illness or medical emergency. If you are sick or are in a medical emergency situation, contact your doctor, visit the E.R., or call 9-1-1.

With that being said, here are 9 different ways to help make the flu go away a little quicker, and/or not suck as much.

Don't be a jerk like me and mind your flu manners! On the first day you have symptoms, call your work or school and tell them you won’t be coming in for a few days. Don't come to work and type and article about it. I probably could have just stayed home and typed this up on a laptop...

I learned this the hard way but when they mean fluids, they don't mean alcohol, or coffee!  It doesn’t all have to be water though. Try fruit juices, sports drinks, and broth-based soups (like chicken noodle soup). These fluids keep your respiratory system hydrated and help turn that nasty, thick mucus into a thin liquid you can cough up and spit out.

If you have a fever, that means your body has cranked the heat up to fight off the flu.

You can treat it and the aches and pains that come with it with over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. Always ask your doctor which is right for you. You should also never give aspirin to anyone younger than 19. Here is why.

Over-the-counter treatments can calm that annoying cough you have. Try an expectorant, which turns mucus into liquid so you can cough it up and don't have build up in your lungs. Don’t give over-the-counter cough or cold medicine to children under 4.

Is that nose more clogged up than your shower drain? Sit in the bathroom with the door closed. Let the shower run hot until the room fills with moist steam. Make sure the drain is cleared out so you don't flood the bathroom.

I need to buy one of these ASAP!

If the air in your house is dry, a mist humidifier or vaporizer can moisten it to help ease congestion and coughs. Don’t use a warm mist because it can promote the growth of bacteria and molds, which is really bad. Also make sure to keep the device thoroughly clean to prevent mold development, which is also really bad.

Sucking on soothing lozenges, or cough drop as normal people call it, will moisten and coat a scratchy throat. It may quiet your cough so you aren't annoying to everyone. Plus, people will constantly ask "who has a cough drop?"

As if you already weren't salty from being sick, you could use saline nose drops or sprays to help. They are available over-the-counter at any drug or grocery store. They work and they’re safe for kids. Put several drops into one nostril, and gently blow the mucus and saline out. Repeat the process on the other side until both are unblocked.

I use a Neti pot in the shower to clear up any sinus blockage. Using it in the shower makes you feel a lot less disgusting too.
