With restaurants and bars reopening, what's happening with high school sports in Tier One?

Basketball is considered a "high risk" sport so teams are allowed to practice, have inter-squad games, but are not allowed to play games against other schools. WREX "High Risk" sports include:

  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Boxing
  • Hockey
  • Lacrosse
  • Rugby
  • Wrestling

This hopefully will lead to good news in the spring, where fall sports like football, soccer, and volleyball have been pushed. Seriously, high school football in spring. This should actually be pretty cool. As winter turns into spring and we become fully "open," the roar of the crowd, the band playing, and the smell of popcorn will be welcomed with open arms locally.

Those sports that are considered "low risk" such as bowling, cheer, dance, swimming and diving are good to go. The Illinois Department of Public Health has everything explained HERE It is a lot of reading, kind of confusing at times, but does break down all the what to do and not do, for high school athletics. he good news is the local "sailing teams" are able to participate, just stay six feet apart on the boat please.

Stay safe out there, and let's do what's right so all the Northern Illinois athletes can fully return, soon. Until then, take advantage of all the practice time.
