Want To Know If Radar Detectors Are Legal In Illinois?
The other day a friend and I were talking about things you see in or on cars very often. Bench seats, cigarette lighters, and antennas on the exterior. Another thing I feel like I haven't spotted in a while is a radar detector. If there is one in the car, are radar detectors legal in Illinois?
Things from the past are hard to find in vehicles made within the last 5 years or so. I mentioned you don't see car antennas much anymore but I should specify. You might think, "This idiot... every car has an antenna." What I'm talking about are long antennas on the hood of the vehicle or retractable antennas. You definitely don't see those often unless it's a classic collectible.
Bench seats used to be a thing in the front seat. I remember getting stuck in the middle in the front and hating it. That awkward hump was never enjoyable and it was worse if the car/truck was a stick shift.
Other Features You Don't See In Newer Cars
- Ashtray/lighter combo
- Hand-cranked windows
- Audible turn signals
- Hood ornaments
When radar detectors came to mind so did the question of whether or not they are legal in Illinois. When I was a kid I remember hearing about how they were illegal. To be clear, everything ever made during my youth was either bad or illegal so who knows the truth?
When I was searching for this answer I stumbled upon an $850 radar detector. What?!

I don't know what any of that jargon means but for that price it had better make my car invisible.
