As of a result of a strong solar flare that occurred late Tuesday, here in Illinois and Southern Wisconsin could get a glimpse of the northern lights.

The solar flare should arrive at Earth early on Thursday, shaking up the planet's magnetic field and expanding the Aurora Borealis south. The lights could go as far as Colorado and central Illinois according to federal space weather forecaster Joe Kunches. He Adds "the best viewing would most likely be Thursday evening, if weather permits."

The University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute predicts that while most of Canada and the northern edges of the United States should see the lights, cities like Chicago, Boston, Cleveland, Seattle, and Des Moines could see the colors low on the horizon.
