Why Many Say Chicago Instead of Their Illinois Hometown
How come Illinois residents commonly identify themselves as being from Chicago when they meet people outside the state?
Whenever you meet an Illinois resident on your travels they'll likely tell you they're from Chicago even if they live hours from the city. No one intends to mislead people when they claim to be from Chicago. Illinois residents have several important reasons for mentioning "Chicago" as their origin when they travel outside the state.

Chicago Is the Most Recognizable City
Cities such as Peoria, Rockford, and Naperville remain relatively unknown outside the state of Illinois. But Chicago? Everyone knows Chicago. The United States hosts one of its largest urban areas where deep-dish pizza originated and where the Willis (Sears) Tower stands alongside Wrigley Field home of the Cubs. Many Illinois residents choose to simplify location explanations by referencing "Chicago" instead of detailing their small-town origins.
Avoiding the Blank Stare
When you tell someone from California you hail from Rockford in Illinois you'll probably receive a baffled expression and then hear "Where's that?". You’re likely to get a confused look, followed by the inevitable question: Saying "I'm from Chicago" avoids having to explain that Normal is a college town situated in central Illinois which helps maintain conversation flow without needing to delve into geographical details.
Proximity Matters
A substantial number of people who reside in Illinois find themselves relatively close to Chicago. Suburbs spread from the city limits to distances of 40-50 miles across the metropolitan area. Residents of Aurora, Joliet and Schaumburg regard Chicago as their primary center for cultural events and economic activities. Their employment, attendance at sports events, or family connections in Chicago make saying "Chicago" an automatic response.
A Sense of Identity
Many Illinois residents share a connection with Chicago's strong identity despite not living inside the city limits. Many elements of Chicago’s culture including its food, sports teams and notorious winter weather shape the state of Illinois. People from suburban or rural parts of Illinois may use "I’m from Chicago" to express their connection to the city's shared identity.
When someone from Illinois says they are from Chicago understand it as their simple way of describing their location rather than an exaggeration.
