Michael Jordan’s Illinois Home Could Become a Highland Park Tourist Destination
For years, one of Illinois’ most famous addresses sat quietly behind gates in Highland Park, known mostly for who once lived there. Now, Michael Jordan’s former home is back in the spotlight, this time not for basketball nostalgia, but for what it could become.
The seven-acre estate, often referred to as Champions Point, is at the center of a proposal that has Highland Park residents, city leaders, and curiosity-seekers paying attention.
A Legendary Home With a New Vision

According to abc7chicago.com, the property’s current owner, John Cooper, has proposed transforming the former Jordan estate into a public-facing destination. His concept includes a museum experience paired with what he calls “living classrooms,” designed to deliver an immersive, multi-sensory focus on personal growth and “greatness.”
According to Cooper, the idea goes beyond sports history. The goal would be to create a space that teaches life lessons inspired by achievement, discipline, and transformation.

From Private Estate to Public Destination?
While the proposal includes potential partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and the Highland Park Park District, along with dedicated days offering free admission, it would still function as a commercial enterprise. That distinction raised questions among city officials, including whether public benefit would truly outweigh the scale of the project.
Neighbors Voice Concerns About Impact
Some nearby residents expressed unease about what a tourist destination could mean for a quiet residential area. Concerns ranged from increased traffic to the idea of a steady flow of visitors just steps from private homes.
City Leaders Hit Pause for Now
No decisions have been made. The Highland Park City Council has asked for more details and additional discussion before considering any zoning changes. For now, the proposal remains just that… a proposal.
It’s far from decided, but in a region that constantly balances history, growth, and neighborhood character, it’s a conversation worth watching.
