Extreme Heat in Illinois Warps Asphalt in Middle of the Road [PHOTO]

Illinois is known for its diverse climate changes since it's an all-seasons state, but to see something like this happen because of the heat is kind of wild.

I see the wildest things come across my Facebook feed, including a picture of a road near Freeport, Illinois where the street was completely crumpled like a piece of paper!

Extreme Heat in Illinois Warps Asphalt in Middle of the Road

On Friday, June 21st, tons of calls came in to Stephenson County Police with reports near Harlem Center Road and Bypass 20 were buckling.

"The warmer the temperature the more the pavement material expands. The sun heats the pavement, and the pavement expands and then buckles. Buckles more commonly occur on older concrete pavements." [dot.state]

I mean... the temps weren't crazy high the past few weeks, so it's kind of surprising to see this happening when we've only been in the high 80s and low 90s this summer.  I don't think we've even broken 100 degrees yet!

According to a source, it was "presumably from the heat, and also had caused a multiple vehicle accident.  Initial reports are eastbound lanes from Harlem Center Road are down to one lane" [Rockford Scanner]

That's wild!  Hopefully we don't see much more of that as summer heats up in the state.  It's dangerous and very inconvenient for drivers!  Stay safe on the road and report any buckling you might see on your next drive.
