15 Illinois Hospitals Earn Spots On US “Safest Hospitals" List

Illinois hospitals have been in the news lately, and for some very good reasons.

Last week, I told you about the 3 Illinois hospitals that landed on the list of the very best hospitals in the entire world, and the week before that we covered the top 25 hospitals in the state of Illinois.

Now, we're looking at safety and patient experience in hospitals, and once again, Illinois makes a very good showing. Our state certainly has its problems and drawbacks, but when it comes to hospital care, Illinois is doing really well when compared to some other states.

These Rankings Cover 442 Hospitals In 40 States That Represent The Top Ten Percent Of Hospitals Across The Country For Hospital Safety

In their piece entitled 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Awards, HealthGrades.com, a comprehensive database of ratings and comparisons for physicians, hospitals, and health care providers took a look at things like "Medicare claims for hospitalizations across 13 patient safety indicators, each representing a serious, potentially preventable complication."

The analysis found that four of these complications accounted for nearly 76 percent of all patient safety events between 2021 and 2023, and that patients treated at a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospital have a lower risk of experiencing each of these adverse events:

In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (54 percent less likely);
Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (54.8 percent less likely);
Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (69.4 percent less likely);
Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (72 percent less likely).
