Remind me to never buy a house near an airport. An Illinois family was shocked when they heard a huge boom in their yard only to learn that it was an emergency slide that had fallen off of a huge airplane.

I saw Yahoo News share this frightening tale of what happened recently near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. It's the story of the family of Patrick Devitt who on Monday, July 17, 2023 heard a loud sound outside. Soon after, his father-in-law found a huge emergency slide in their yard.

According to ABC 7 out of Chicago, the slide had fallen off of a United Airlines 767 into the yard located in the 4700 block of North Chester Avenue in Chicago. The plane reportedly landed in Chicago in the middle of the day on Monday, July 17 when maintenance workers said the emergency slide was missing.

The Devitt family knew where the slide was.

The good news is that no one was injured by the falling object. The problem is the FAA now needs to figure out why the slide became dislodged in the first place.

I've heard of objects falling from planes before, but nothing as substantial as an emergency slide. It's also good news that the plane didn't need the slide either if you'd like to look at this as a glass-half-full sort of situation.

The Yahoo News story did say that the Devitt family home did have some roof damage involving shingles. That will be an interesting thing to explain to the insurance adjuster.
