Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani have been together for four years now and the country singer is still surprised that they began dating in the first place.

Shelton joined Martina McBride on her podcast Vocal Point, where he discussed his "shocking" relationship with the "Don't Speak" singer and then compared it to his Sexiest Man Alive honor given by People from 2017.

"If you thought the People magazine cover was shocking, mine and Gwen’s relationship is probably the biggest head-scratcher," Shelton joked to McBride.

During the interview, Shelton has revealed that during Stefani's first season on The Voice, the two singers didn't hit it off right away.

"I’ll even say that she was, of all the coaches, the least that I had gotten to know the first season she was on the show—because she had just had a baby," said Shelton. "So any time there was downtime, she was busy.

"She was gone, she was on her trailers, she was taking care of the baby, you know, and there was never those moments that usually happen on this show, where at the end of the day we’re sitting around out here at the couches and having a drink, talking, laughing."

However, that distance didn't last. The two became closer after both Shelton and Stefani went through divorces; with Shelton divorcing fellow country singer Miranda Lambert and Stefani divorcing rocker Gavin Rossdale. The two bonded over their shared experiences and have been together since 2015.

Despite each having their hardships, Shelton remains optimistic that everything happens for a reason.

"And it’s one of those things that, who knows?" he said. "It had to have been meant to be."

Shelton and Stefani are both currently coaching on this season of the hit NBC reality show. The series airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8PM ET.
