The areas only White Castle restaurant is closing.

If you have a love for sliders, get them while you can. As of Sunday, White Castle in DeKalb will be closed for good. A sign posted on the door of the restaurant says that Saturday, May 20th, will be the store's last day open. The restaurant is located on the corner of Sycamore and E Dresser Road. The sign reads:

"This castle is closing permanently on Saturday May 20th"

Up until now, this location of White Castle has been closest one for Rockford residents to get to. For years, I've known of people from the Rockford area who would make the trek to DeKalb just to get their slider 'fix.'

As someone who has frequented this location for years, since they opened in 2007, I am saddened by this announcement, because this means that Stateline residents will now have to travel to the Chicago Suburbs for the nearest White Castle.

In the last couple of years, when visiting the DeKalb location, I observed that there were never any lines, and quite often, I was the only person in the restaurant. I always thought that White Castle made a big mistake in choosing this location, as it is far away from the NIU college campus and located near a shopping center that is mostly vacant. Had the White Castle been located on Rt 38, near the college campus, it would have done a huge business, because of traffic from NIU.

If you want to get your White Castle fix, do it now, as the last slider will be served Saturday night.
