Rules Don't Apply is the first film Warren Beatty has directed in 20 years, and the first film he’s starred in since 2001’s Town and Country. It’s taken many years for Beatty to get his passion project off the ground, but Rules Don’t Apply will finally hit theaters this fall, and the first photos from the long-developing film have arrived to give us a sneak peek at Beatty’s highly-anticipated return to the big screen.

In addition to the photos, EW also spoke briefly with Beatty about Rules Don’t Apply, in which the legendary actor and director takes on the role of another iconic director: Howard Hughes. Although Beatty never met Hughes, he explains that they knew many of the same people:

I’ve had the idea of making a movie about Howard Hughes in mind for a long time. We never met, but I sometimes feel like I knew everybody who knew Howard and I never lost my curiosity about him. It’s just that I don’t run around doing movies all the time.

It took Beatty a long time to figure out how to tell the story, which isn’t a Hughes biopic. He says it’s a comedy, and describes the plot as follows:

This is a story about a young man (Alden Ehrenreich) and a young woman (Lily Collins) who come to Hollywood, both of whom are affected by American Protestant, American Puritan morality on the brink of the sexual revolution and the rise of feminism that was to take place in the early ’60s.

As mentioned above, the film also stars Alden Ehrenreich — who recently landed the role of young Han Solo in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Star Wars spinoff — and Lily Collins, along with Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Martin Sheen, Oliver Platt and Matthew Broderick.

And if you’re wondering why Beatty hasn’t made a film in 20 years, he says he’s been enjoying his life at home with his wife and Rules Don’t Apply co-star, Annette Bening:

I have four children and any one of them is more interesting than any 12 movies I’ve done. I had my life before them and my life since them.

Rules Don’t Apply hits theaters on November 11.
