Belvidere VFW has announced they will cancel this year's Veterans Day parade.November 11th is Veteran's Day and the streets of Belvidere will be missing something that has been a part of the for decades.

The Rockford register Star reports that  this year's parade was canceled because Belvidere School District students will be in school on the federal holiday.

The parade has been a tradition in Belvidere for decades. In the past, the annual parade took place on State Street.

Past participants included

  • school marching bands
  • veterans
  • local scouts

Greg Kelm, VFW Post 1461 commander and Vietnam veteran told the Register Star

Without our students we don't have a parade. Take out our bands and take out our Scout troops, who do you have?

The good news is that a memorial observance will still take place at 10 a.m. on Veterans Day at VFW Post 1461, 1310 W. Lincoln Ave., Belvidere.
