According to The New York Times, the price of cocoa has shot up recently, and you'll feel the results when you hit the candy aisle for Valentine's Day. Your typical box of chocolates will be more expensive, and there might be fewer chocolates in there to boot.

Why? It's pretty basic like and economy class in school. Demand is up around the world, especially in Asia. But the supply is lower, because of high winds and fungal infections affecting cocoa crops in West Africa. These conditions have led African farmers away from growing the crop, thereby lowering the supply.

So, if boxes of chocolates are out of your game plan this year, it's back to the drawing board for Valentine's Day.
