The Holmes Student Center is a three-story building at the center of campus with take out eateries, a student-run restaurant, ballroom and meeting rooms. They are over 50 years old and these newly discussed upgrades are part of a long-term plan to improve the central areas of Northern Illinois' campus.

According to WREX TV 13, NIU trustee John Butler says "The first phase of the Holmes project could cost $16 million to $20 million. Funding would come from a 2010 bond sale that raised $110 million for remodeling dorms and student areas".

Talk of improvements and upgrades to any facility at Northern Illinois University is great news for residence, students, and future students in the Stateline area.
