It seems like every store is open on Thanksgiving. Most major retailers over the past few years jumped aboard the "we gotta be open on Thanksgiving" bandwagon. The good news, two major stores have announced they will not open this year. You may fondly recall the old days when retailers would gear up to kick off the Christmas holiday shopping season on Black Friday, the day AFTER Thanksgiving.

This trend of Thanksgiving sales has led to missed family Thanksgiving dinners for families of shoppers and store employees, alike.

USA Today reports that two big name retailers are bucking the trend and will not open their doors on November 26th.

The two retailers are:

  • Staples Office Supply Store
  • Game Stop

Staples released the following statement regarding the holiday

"We want our customers and associates to enjoy Thanksgiving their own way,” said Demos Parneros, Staples president of North American stores and online, in a company statement.

If you must shop on Thanksgiving, both retailers will have items available on their respective websites and both retailers will be open on Black Friday.

Could this be the start of a positive trend? We'll see.
