I recycle as much as I can. Sometimes though the plastic grocery bags I get from the stores seem to multiply like rabbits. I reuse them for trash bags but I still seem to have more than enough. Now I know what else they can be used for!

The Loves Park chapter of the VFW Post 9759, takes ordinary plastic shopping bags and turns them into beds!

Yes. Really!

They cut the plastic bags into strips and then crochet them into a bed mat to be given to  the homeless veterans here in stateline area.

Their hope is to have 200 bed mats made and ready to pass out by next October for the Top of Illinois Stand Down.

Wow! what a great way to 1. recycle and 2. help out those in need. It's a two-fer in the form of plastic bags.

If you are interesting in helping whether it be crocheting or even cutting the plastic bags into strips you are more than welcome to join the volunteers of VFW Post 9759 in Loves Park, IL.

The group gets together every second Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at VFW Post 9759 on Windsor Road in Loves Park. For more information, please call 815-654-2195.
