If you've driven along Rt 2 in Machesney Park and noticed the trees seem to be very close to your car, when driving, you're not imagining things. Rt. 2 has a tree problem.

In fact, several accidents have resulted because automobiles have been hitting trees along the side of the road as the trees have been growing outward.

WREX-TV is reporting that beginning Monday, Illinois Department of Transportation crews will start removing  trees along a two mile stretch of road along Illinois Rt 2, between Latham and Roscoe Roads in the Machesney Park area to alleviate the problem and make the road safer.

The affected area is approximately two miles and crews expect to complete the tree removal within two weeks.

Rt 2 will remain open, but motorists are reminded to slow down.
