As I was hiding in my basement last night during the tornadoes, I looked over all the all the things I had with me in as I took cover.

I wondered was I totally tornado prepared?

I grabbed my cell phone and charger, my laptop, flashlight, purse with my license and credit cards, my car keys, a blanket and jacket and of course heeded my cat to follow me into the room with the water heater.

According to the Red Cross's Tornado Preparedness I had most of what I needed.

To be tornado prepared these are the essential items you should have with you during a time of a tornado.

  • Important Personal Documents
  • Comfort Items for Children
  • Emergency Contact Cards
  • Local Maps of Your Location
  • A Personal Hygiene Kit
  • First Aid Kit
  • Flashlight, Extra Batteries
  • A Multi Tool
  • Hand-Crank AM/FM/NOAA Radio
  • Safety Blanket
  • 7-Day Supply of Medication
  • Poncho
  • Non-Perishable Food Items
  • Bottled Water

Living in the rural areas for most of my life you think I would have had that in my basement, especially a radio. Duh! I work in radio. However, I know I'm like many, thinking that will never happen to me.

Knowing last night in the aftermath that the tornado passed by within in three miles of me and decimated Fairdale, I'm more serious now of having a packed emergency kit in the basement at all times.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those families and all who were touched by the awful tornadoes.
